The Mercury brand was born with a single-vehicle line as an answer to the competitors who had started before Mercury's inception year of 1939. With growing popularity over the next few years as a well-featured, mid-priced vehicle, Mercury expanded their line and doubled in size to continue the customer growth and succeeded with the introduction of the Monterey and Custom. Although many of the features and even styles stayed similar to the already famous Lincoln line, the new additions were given the more powerful and recognized engines that Ford had been successful with. The long running Flathead aided the sales most for Mercury until 1954 when the Y-Block became universal for Ford.
