The first-generation of the Chevrolet Camaro was brought to the marketplace in September 1966. This brought a new platform along with this new model which was aptly named the F-Body and was set up as a rear wheel drive car. This model would go on to be available as a 2-door, 2+2, coupe or convertible with a choice of the V6 or a V8. There was a couple special packages offered but the SS performance package came with two options of V8 engines, the 350cu in or the highly sought after 396 cu in V8 engine. Also included in this package was a chassis upgrades for better handling and to deal with the additional power as it was built for speed. Other great adds that the SS featured was a non-functioning air inlet on the hood, special striping, and the ever popular SS badging. The first generation finished up in 1969 which, as a last push for sale, was redesigned with a much sportier look than the first two years adding to its popularity and collectability. With age comes discrepancies and although many want to be recognized as a true SS, there are few that are but with great ways to know better what you are buying to confirm the package. When we research the VIN on this particular model it reads as such: •1= Chevrolet •2= Camaro •4= V8 Engine •37= 2-Door Coupe (67-69 model year) •9= 1969 •N= Norwood, Ohio Assembly • 636608= production sequence With this we are able to confirm that the 396ci L89 engine could very well be the original as it looks era-correct. To further investigate this model we look to the Cowl tag which reveals the following: •69= 1969 Model Year •Body Type: 12437= Camaro Coupe •Assembly Plant: NOR = Norwood, Ohio •Interior Trim: 712=Black Vinyl Custom Buckets • Paint: 72 72 = Hugger Orange with Hugger Orange Top •Trim Package: X66 = SS 396cu in And the tell-tale to this one is the famous “X” code located just under the paint code. Showing clearly is the “X66” everyone hopes to have which represents that it was an SS package with the 396 Big Block engine! A wonderful find to the true Camaro fan or collector alike and with its restoration being completed only 1,259 miles ago and about 4 years ago, this is truly like as if it just came off the line!
