The famous GTO line started as a trim option for the Pontiac LeMans in 1964. John Delorean helped break the mold in General Motors to bring the speed to the A-body platform. The GTO is widely considered the first muscle car that started the trend for all of Detroit, and high sales eventually forced them to launch the GTO as its own model line in 1966.
