Ford's answer to the very popular Corvette, the Thunderbird had to not only put Ford back on the radar for the people that wanted a roadster but also one that had some power. The first year the T-Bird out sold the smaller corvette almost 23-1 ratio. Ford not only wanted a sporty roadster, but a car that was enjoyable to drive. Success was multiplied with the performance and style that left dealerships begging for more inventory in the mid to late 50's. The 1955 Ford Thunderbird offered here has been the recipient of a no expense spared, complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration completed in 2009. The body and frame was completely stripped to bare metal and detailed and finished appropriately in factory spec Snowshoe White over Black and White interior. The interior was completely redone at that time including seats, carpet, soft-top drop curtain, and lined with sound deadening material. Much of the dash, gauges and dash accessories appear to be preserved and original. The 292 Y block engine was rebuilt and fortified with new Eddlebrock 4 barrel carb, the transmission was completely serviced, the rear end inspected and with new fluids, new fuel tank and sending unit, new proper fuel pump, the suspension was completely serviced with new bushings and new shocks. The brake system includes a new booster, front disc conversion with drums remaining in the rear, the electrical has been properly converted to 12 volt and features a new power window system, new electronic ignition, and new electric windshield wiper motor replacing the original vacuum system. Other highlights include: new premium convertible top, new tires including spare, new / refurbished chrome and trim, new Ididit true tilt steering column and steering wheel, New T-bird retro look radio with dual speakers and usb port, and 4 way power seat. Since completion, the car has been driven just 600 miles and has remained in a private collection until our recent acquisition. First generation Ford Thunderbirds remain an iconic part of American automotive history and as such, remain desirable in all four corners of the globe. The car remains turn-key and ready for immediate enjoyment. Documentation includes a large box of restoration receipts, research, assembly manuals etc.
