With demand coming from many resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean, the VW thing was used to make a vehicle that was useful, fun and create an immediate Island / beach resort experience. The 1974 Acapulco Edition Thing fit the bill. The Type 181 thing was the perfect platform for the conversion. The Volkswagen 181, “Thing”, has become something of a cult classic, due in no small measure to its angular styling, which leaves no question as to its strictly utilitarian purpose. The doors and windows are removable without tools, and the windshield folds down, similar to a Jeep. The interior is a perfect illustration of form following function, and its painted steel door panels and split, flat bench seats look appropriately post-modern, industrial chic today. Like the World War II era Type 82 Kubelwagen, the Type 181 used mechanical parts and a rear-engine platform, manual transmission and a flat-4 air-cooled 1600 cc engine. The 1974 VW “Acapulco” thing offered here has been the recipient of a fresh restoration. It features new tires, teak wood floor treatment, wicker under dash tray, luggage cage, surrey top, and the classic blue and white Acapulco paint scheme. The mechanicals have all been rebuilt and the vehicle has had a fresh service. No expense was spared and no detail overlooked. The VW Thing is a proven vehicle. Their uniqueness, simplicity and utility have fallen into favor among auto enthusiasts and collectors alike. The Acapulco versions are the top on the line and offer a relaxed, open air experience where you can smell the salt air of the ocean. This is a great vehicle for investment or to keep at a seasonal home. No wrong decision here.
