In 1996 Porsche introduced is completely redesigned Targa for the 911 / 993 model. Gone was the removable roof that proved to be a bit cumbersome and storage was always an issue, and gone was the large B-pillar that gave the 911 Targa a different and to many, not a flattering look as compared to the undisturbed, smooth lines of its Coupe counter-part. The Targa version of the 993 saw the debut of a retractable glass roof, a design that would carry forward in the 911 line. The roof would retract creating a large opening that would continue the open air experience that the Targa 911's are known for. Everything about this design was better. The Targa can now share the same side view lines as the Carrera Coupes; no more pulling over to remove or install the roof as now it could be done with a push of a button, and no more wind noise that the earlier Targa's were known to have.
